چکیده

Introduction: Dust suspended in the Martian atmosphere is crucial in determining the thermal and dynamical conditions. Diurnal variation of dust, waterice and boundary-layer characteristics at the NASA Phoenix lander site are investigated using a onedimensional Atmospheric Boundary Layer (ABL) model and a Mars Microphysical Model (MMM). The diurnal cycle of temperature measured by the Phoenix lander [1] (used as input for the MMM and a test of the ABL model) has been very consistent for the first 60 sols of the mission. The optical depth, as measured by the SSI camera [2], has generally decreased.

Reproducing Meteorological Observations at the Mars Phoenix Lander Site Using the Nasa Ames

The mission began in late Spring (L s ~77˚) and ended in midSummer (L s ~148˚), lasting for 151 sols [2]. In situ measurements by the lander characterized the local atmospheric conditions (i.e. temperature, pressure, wind speeds and direction, opacity of dust and water ice, and the detection of surface water ice frost) [3,4]. Phoenix measured a steady decline in near surface atmospheric pressur...

Phoenix Landing Site Geomorphology: Surface Stability and Implcations for the Mar- Tian Latitude-dependent Mantle

Introduction. The NASA Phoenix lander has provided a unique first-look at permafrost processes operating on the surface of the martian northern plains [1]. Critical results from the mission include the detection of an icy surface present beneath thin, overlying, dry sediments [1-3]; complex soil chemistry comparable to that observed in terrestrial cold and arid terrains [4, 5]; and weather/clim...

The Depth of the Daytime Convective Boundary Layer on Mars : A Case of Extremes

Introduction: It has long been realized that the daytime convective boundary layer on Mars is generally much deeper than that on Earth [1]. This is fundamentally the consequence of the low density of the Martian atmosphere, coupled with the fact that the solar thermal forcing of the surface is not that much weaker than on the Earth. Simple consideration of these factors leads to a basic recogni...

A 3-d Aerosol Profiling Lidar for Planetary Rover Missions

Introduction: Existing remote sensing techniques provide limited information on vertical profiles of dust and cloud distributions in Martian atmosphere. Lidar on PHOENIX mission to Mars demonstrated high vertical resolution aerosol profiling capability [1]. A conceptual study is presented for an advanced 3-D profiling lidar for aerosols and clouds. This instrument will have a form factor suitab...

Optical properties of long-range transported Saharan dust over Barbados as measured by dual-wavelength depolarization Raman lidar measurements

Dual-wavelength Raman and depolarization lidar observations were performed during the Saharan Aerosol Long-range Transport and Aerosol-Cloud interaction Experiment in Barbados in June and July 2013 to characterize the optical properties and vertical distribution of long-range transported Saharan dust after transport across the Atlantic Ocean. Four major dust events were studied during the measu...
